Back turning machines are specialized lathes that allow machining the back side of workpieces that have already been machined on the front side. Back-grinding machines are similar, but use grinding wheels instead of turning tools to remove material from the back of a workpiece that has already been machined. A typical application example is the machining of turbine blades, where the shape of the blade is machined from the front and the cutting edges must be ground from the back.
